The US Forest Service - Pacific Southwest Region is looking for knowledgeable, high-energy individuals who like a challenging work environment, have good communication skills, and enjoy working on diverse projects. We are seeking to fill positions in multiple duty locations throughout California and at all experience levels from an Entry Level Survey Technician (GS-5/6/7), Survey Technician (GS-7/8/9), Land Surveyor (GS-11/12), and Zone Lead Supervisor (GS-12/13).

Position GS Series & Grade Brief Job Description Duty Location
Entry Level Land Survey Technician
(3 positions) GS-0817-5/6/7 Conducts simple traverse surveys using manual instruments including compass and chain. Searches, evaluates, and monuments public land corners. Records and calculates surveying data recognizing inconsistencies requiring supplemental information. Uses transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring systems, (and/or other instruments) in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines. Records data and makes sketches of topography and other physical features. May conduct p-line surveys or assist with road location or road design. May provide leadership and training for lower grade crew members as necessary. Nevada City, CA; Clovis, CA; San Bernardino, CA; Redding, CA

Land Survey Technician
(6 positions) GS-0817-7/8/9 Performs land survey work that requires very exacting measurements to establish basic horizontal and vertical controls. Establishes working base lines and reference elevations for detailed surveys, all within the prescribed degree of accuracy. Operates instruments and equipment, and makes minor adjustments to such instruments, in order to locate land and property corners and boundary lines. Identifies or verifies corners by inspection, testimony of landowners, and comparison with references or by survey using original and resurvey recorded data, etc.
Performs varied surveys, such as location, right-of-way, and property surveys for a segment or portion of a project. Utilizes a variety of surveying related equipment and GPS equipment to perform surveys and prepare associated documents and reports. Compiles topographic maps, survey plats, and related information using appropriate equipment and techniques to obtain and depict all details and information pertinent to the intended purpose. Land Surveyor
(9 positions) GS-1373-11/12 Provides professional land surveying input for the planning and programming of Forest land surveying priorities. Responsible for the implementation and accomplishment of the finalized program. Plans and directs the execution of survey projects of a complex nature usually associated with boundary disputes or title claims cases, but also including high-order geodetic surveys, right-of-way, easement, and engineering surveys. Recommends solutions to land disputes involving rectangular public land surveys, patent mining claims, homestead surveys, easements, right-of-way surveys, etc. Also serves as the specialist for control surveys as required for photogrammetric surveys. Provides technical assistance and guidance to unit management and staff personnel on problems involving boundary disputes. This includes recommendations on administrative procedures, survey methods, evidence evaluation, legal interpretation, corner restoration, etc., consistent with Forest Service policy and standards. Zone Lead Supervisor Land Surveyor
(4 positions) GS-1373-12/13 Provides leadership and direction for the Forest Lands Survey Program on multiple Forests, including providing necessary support for related recreation, timber, engineering, lands and other resource staff programs. Is responsible for accomplishment of the Forest Land Line Location target. Serves as the Forests’ expert on survey matters. Defines the scope of all survey projects, writes instructions and specifications, assigns work to subordinates or contractors, reviews, evaluates, and approves all legal plats, descriptions, and reports that require Land Surveyor certifications. Recommends solutions to land disputes involving rectangular public land surveys, patented mining claims, homestead surveys, easements, right-of-way surveys, etc. Provides outside Agency coordination and cooperation on property boundary matters. Negotiates and executes cost share and cooperative agreements with adjoiners. Serves as Chairperson of the Technical Review Board for survey contracts and as the technical member of the negotiation team. Serves as Contracting Officer's Representative on survey projects formally contracted to private firms, prepares specifications, and/or reviews surveying contracts on the Forest. Makes inspections for compliance with technical engineering and contractual requirements. Upon completion of contracts, recommends approval of final payment.
