With jobs so scarce and hours cut back, I've come to notice, that when we actually get a signed contract, everybody in the office mobs the infolder like a blue light sale on Golf clubs and bass bait.
The trouble is, is we know the client is anxious to get started and they know its slow. In an effort to keep the staff reined in, we've come up with a symbol of clear communication and project separation that actually promotes unity and stablizes an otherwise chaotic situation.
I call it the Hour-glass method. An hour glass must communicate its contents from top to bottom, but then in reality it has no top or bottom.
In fact, it it the reverse of modern management. That portion of the glass (staff) which is burdon (full of sand) becomes the top. Now it becomes very important for the small channel of communication to be completely clear to communicatre to the bottom, for if it becomes clogged in any way, time stops. so does the job.
The only time there is no top or bottom represented, is during transition.
The glass must not be allowed to lay horizontal. (flat)
For it to remain as such, time indeed stops there also.

Ps Another use for the hour glass is to time Evan going up a hill, but that's another thread. . . . .;^]

It working already
Ya all probably thought I was drunk with all that hour glass babel.
Sorry, I wasnt.
BUT the little experiment is working. When given responsibility WITH familiarity, the individual is enpowered.
example; When you see someone and say "hi, how are you", you may get an "o. . . k" with a confused smile"
But , if you can say "Hi Angelina , how are you" ? Angelina is more apt to respond due to the familiarity.
A channel of communication is opened.
When employees and fellow workers must wait on all information to come down from the top, like rain off a pyramid, the process tends to slowdown.
I know my pointed head cant handle all of that information.
Encouraging people to take charge of their tasks, opens their desire to communicate outwardly as opposed to simply "following orders"
