Can I take the State exam before 6 years of experience?

Post by MTL92 »

Hi all,

I’m currently studying for my PLS and plan on taking the national exam at the beginning of 2024. I know there are work/education requirements for the State Exam, but I’ll be a month short of my requirements when the April date comes around. Would I be able to apply and take that exam, assuming I pass the national, with such a small amount of time left needed for the experience requirements? Would like to not have to wait until October to take it.

We'll see if someone from BPELSG chimes in, but back in 1979 when I was in your situation, I did have to wait until the Fall examination due to the experience requirements.

Criteria needed before submitting an application for licensure:

Pass FS exam
Pass PS exam
Acquire minimum of 72 months of qualifying land surveying experience (approved education can help)

You and your references are basically stating that you meet the requirements for licensure at the time of submitting your application. Feel free to reach out to Dallas.Sweeney@dca.ca.gov if you have any questions. He is the Senior Registrar Land Surveyor at the Board who will be reviewing your experience.

I was in your exact shoes and had to wait.

I feel your pain, but rules are rules. Some day they'll probably offer the test more often but we're not there yet.

The annual examinee population would likely have to increase from its normal 200+- numbers to at least 600-800 annually for the Board to be able to support offering the state PLS exam more often than twice a year.
