San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is seeking a Survey Associate within our Design & Construction division who will be responsible for supervising the work of a survey party, following established surveying methods and procedures; interacting and discussing with department staff, contractors and others on survey needs and projects. Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
- Supervises the work of a survey party by planning, organizing, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of subordinates, including completing performance evaluations for subordinates and administering disciplinary procedures when necessary.
- Plans and organizes surveying work by determining the logistics for conducting each survey; setting and adhering to project deadlines; assigning responsibilities to subordinates; and managing ongoing work to ensure that surveys provide the necessary and desired information and documentation.
- Trains survey party staff to use surveying equipment and follow procedures such as establishing line and grade for construction projects, performing topographical and other surveys, stadia work, cross-sectioning and contour line-setting, and establishing and maintaining precise monument and control lines, official elevations, survey lines, and boundary lines; stays current on surveying techniques and improvements in equipment.
- Discusses survey needs and projects with departmental staff, contractors, and others to plan survey work so that it is completed accurately and provides necessary information.
- Reads and interprets maps, drawings, and prior survey notes, such as subdivision, right-of-way, parcel, contour, hydrographic (Port), lease maps, and construction drawings to plan survey work.
- Prepares and maintains survey field notes by recording necessary data on the surveying process and final product, such as measurements, readings, problems encountered; and reviewing and including the field notes of subordinate personnel.
- Performs mathematical computations necessary in surveying work to determine distances, elevations, angles, areas, traverses, etc., and interprets findings.
- Tracks supply and equipment needs for the survey party; makes sure supplies do not run out.
Utilizes a personal computer and survey applications to download and check survey information and maps; may include use of AutoCAD.
Drives a vehicle to work sites.
Performs related duties as required.

How to qualify
1. Six years of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field) which must include two years of experience in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5312 Survey Assistant II;
OR
2. Bachelor of Science degree in Geomatics or related field AND two years of experience in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5312 Survey Assistant II;
OR
3. An Associate of Science degree with a concentration in Geomatics or related field AND four years of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field) which must include two years of experience in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5312 Survey Assistant II;
OR
4. Possession of a valid Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) license issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors AND four years of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field) which must include two years of experience in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5312 Survey Assistant II.

NOTES:
Related educational fields include geography, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), math, and/or civil engineering.
Some positions require that the incumbent travel to various work sites, which requires possession of a valid California driver’s license at the time of appointment. Insurability under the hiring department’s automobile liability insurance must be maintained throughout employment.

- Clear understanding of a collaborative & integrated team environment
- Experience with Trimble surveying equipment and associated software
- Experience with MS Excel, ACAD, and processing of large quantities of data
