Those were just comments in general. Just me voicing my thoughts.. Today, was my 8th day of being engaged. I think I am still in a daze.

I may be going to China this August for a month. Just found that out today.

PS I will pay huge sums of money for a pill or tonic that makes me fluent in Mandarin if anyone is selling.

What the heck is a "FD SSDM"?

I'm not working down there, don't worry but I sometimes look at the maps related to some case or other and see that. I spell things out on my R/Ss like iron pipe and concrete monument with California Division of Forestry Brass Cap etc etc.

Found stainless steel Deutsche Mark. If you found a stainless steel Deutsche Mark, you'd note it on your map, too; they're very rare.

City of LA "Standard Survey Disk Monument". They also have SSM (Standard Survey Monument) or SSMHM (Standard Sewer Man Hole Monument).

And I spell them out when I find them.

Dave, you bring up a interesting topic, one of which I’m guilty of doing too. But surveyor’s need to take a step back from their maps and realize who are going to be using these. Layman, attorneys, title officers, planners, engineers, surveyors, etc… How can any of these people understand the basic concepts of these maps, if even other surveyors don’t know what the original surveyor is trying to say? Aren’t we supposed to ‘follow in the steps of the original surveyor’? If I as another Licensed Land Surveyor cannot understand what you did, how can anyone else?

Short story, like you and Ryan mentioned, spell out your ‘abbreviations’ or place a abbreviation legend (similar to what I’ve attached possibly), on the face of your maps. Personal preference is that I like when people spell words out, but I haven’t been forced myself to do that, so in turn I place a legend, with any and all of my abbreviations used within that survey.

But how many uncountable times have non-surveyors scratched their heads, then moved on, not having the time or energy to track down a surveyor to get a definition?
