Tract No. 845 created the centerline of Pacific Street at 660' and parallel with Beach Boulevard.
Tract No. 1050 established the S.W. corner, S.E. quarter, S.E. quarter, S.E. quarter, Section 2 at 662.57' from the S.E. corner of Section 2, along the section line. Based on a lack of any other measurements along the section line, we'll have to 'assume' (there's that dirty word) that Bates prorated to establish that corner at that distance (calculates to 2650.28' measured vs. 2650.50' record per Tract No. 845, an acceptable difference).
To create the centerline of Pacific Street within Tract No. 1050, south of 19th Street, Bates held 660' and parallel to Beach Boulevard in order to match up with Pacific Street within Tract No. 845. Unfortunately, the newly created centerline of Pacific Street and the westerly line of the S.E. quarter, S.E. quarter, S.E. quarter, Section 12 are not the same.
Hoy made the mistake of defining both lines as one and the same. Had he not made this mistake, Pacific Street would have been created at 60' width, instead of the existing 62’+. Unfortunately, that error has been perpetuated and now exists as a confusing problem for anybody who comes along in the future to perform a survey in that area (as exampled in Parcel Map No. 83-1059).
To get to the original question, I would guesstimate that "GR." stands for "Granted", since Hoy knew there was something ‘wrong’ with the line(s), but didn’t figure out why, and 'assumed' that extra 2'+ had been granted as a part of Tract No. 1050.
