Old surveyors never die, they climb mountains instead. My Dad, Tom DeLaMare (LS 3407), 72 years old, made it to the top of Half Dome this weekend. Now that I've been up there twice, I think I'm good for the rest of my life. Tom can put one more check mark on his bucket list. 72 years old and he hiked 18 miles for 14.5 hours with 4800' elevation gain! I know I won't be doing that at 72. I barely made it this time as it was. I have a video of him coming down the cables as .wmv file that I zipped up to a .zip, but I could not attach it for some reason.

We're leaving tomorrow morning for our annual stay at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. At the request of a friend, we've put Cloud's Rest on our itinerary for Saturday. From Tenaya Lake it's not anywhere near the hike that Half Dome is, but it's still a good day's work.

I speak from only partial experience. I did the Cloud's Rest hike a few years ago, but I haven't yet attempted Half Dome. I'm hoping that the line of my decline in ability will intersect the line of my son's increase in ability such that we can hike it together in a few years. I'm 56 and he's 11, so I think it might work out.

Bring a rain coat, been having afternoon lighting stroms with hail etc. This a.m. as I left the house could already see some good built up, should make for some great sunsets.

I got back yesterday after a fantastic week in the high country. We did see some late afternoon rain, but fortunately we were always back at the lodge by that time.

My son, now 11, caught the hiking bug for real this year. We started off the week with a hike up to May Lake and Mount Hoffman, followed the next day by Mount Dana. (I had my doubts that he'd be able to do it, but he did great!) Then a lazy day on Lembert Dome and down the river a bit, then a trip to Bud Lake via Upper Cathedral Lake, then another lazy day along the river. We capped it off with a hike to Clouds Rest on Tuesday. It was a glorious week.
