Anyone have a copy of this court case? I'll have to pay a visit to the local law library otherwise. Just doing some extracurricular activities, don't panic.

Was Haley (the original surveyor mentioned) the ship's captain? Supposedly Santa Barbara was laid out by a ship's captain in order to save money.

Yep, Haley was the Captain who laid out Santa Barbara proper

Thanks for the copy and comments. Haley used a worn out chain held together by leather. I've also heard the natives didn't always help out with the acuracy either (The original Pueblo was supposed to be held in a Trust for the Indians and instead the Mexicans gave it away to the loyal soldiers of the Revolution -among others). Don't quote me, I'm working off memory from a good book on the subject "Land Grants in Alta California". There were plenty of good BLM surveyors out there, but they chose the Captain for some reason (The same reason people pick surveyors today unfortunately). I have an interesting survey and a 1897 deed where I needed to read into the case. The streets are supposed to be 60' feet wide and blocks 150 "yards" but none of them are. Decades later the City had to go through and give the 60 feet to the roads, and you'll see some deed takes to that effect -that's my theory since is is no real paper trail- just a messed up survey. Pick up an Assessor's Map sometime and you'll see the gaps - original owner = City of Santa Barbara.

I used to use that and it seemed like they changed the website and I couldn't pull documents like I used to. How did you pull it? Did you use a search or just plug in the case?
