I am surveying a residential that is hard joined to the 2 Freeway in Glendale. The survey is Topographic / Architectural for remodel/addition.

The freeway fence is severely over line, about 20 feet in it's worst case.

Who do I direct my client to to get this problem resolved?

I will just forward that contact information to the client. He wants his land and he gets to deal with the state about it.

Would the above described scenario trigger the need to prepare and file a record of survey, assuming one wasn't necessary to begin with?

Glendale is in District 7. 12 is Orange County.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like you haven't contacted Caltrans for their records. I think before you have your client contact Caltrans, you might want to contact them yourself. You will need to pull their R/W record maps and?or appraisal maps, and any monumentation maps they may have, to determine where CT thinks the R/W line is since your client abuts the freeway.

You need to have a Thomas Guide page and grid number. Then he will send you the index sheet from which you choose the sheets you need copies of.

I have all the necessary research I need. I did come across some interesting CalTrans field notes done in 1974. They are part of a work order for doing some topo of a failure and a special note that read "Locate the fence".

Apparently the fence was placed wrong prior to 74 and after the 74 field crew had located the fence, the fence was moved. However, it was not moved far enough east. The worst case is 27' over line at the south end.

Looks like CalTrans will have to go out again, locate the fence again, move the fence again...

If you email me be sure to state your position of authority with Caltrans. I am not interested in sending out maps to techs or nosy employees .

You can either take my survey at face value and decide how to handle this, or you can send a crew out and find out my survey is correct.

I would think the prudent thing to do would be to send a copy of your survey to someone in right of way surveys at District 7 (see link for contact info).

All I'm saying is how do you know Caltrans D7 is reading this? I know Tino Ferrer and Diane Wells are both LS's. Fire off an email to both of them and then I think you have done what you can do?

I know a lot of people only read the site, but I've never seen anyone I know from District 7 post on here.

I'm guessing finding someone in CalTrans who cares or wants to get involved is like winning the lottery - better chance to be hit by lighting.

Diane Wells has had a copy of the survey since 12:30 pm today. She called me. Very nice gal.

Now, I am a bit leery about going out, never know if I will get hit by a lightning bolt.

No need to worry about getting hit by lightning. The word was "lighting", and there's always a chance it's favorable! : )

Ah, well, the state has so much $$$ they don't know what to do with it. I'm sure they'll offer to move the fence and build a pool and bring the beer and ...

Sure is a lot of disharmony lately amongst us so-called professionals. Maybe the weakened economy is taking its toll, but united, we stand. Divided, we fall.

My last contact with CalTrans went like this. I went down and got the latest maps and ties for a section of PCH. During the survey and later checking msd vs rec the CalTrans stuff was sloppy to say the least. New spks and washers not fitting the ties from the 50s and 60s. I returned to CalTrans and was told that they started the remonumentation at XX and reran CL to XXXXX. I was somewhere in the middle. I was told that if the record info fell anywhere on the spk or washer that was good enough.

PCH moves around a bit..sections of curb can slide evenly making ties fit within each other..maybe a re run was justified..

That does make sense if you think about it. How many tract maps have you seen with a note "Set micro punch in a spike platform with a tin base"? I have seen too many RS that says "Found spike/tin 0.02' e'ly of true angle point" or corner or BC ?
