I may be late to the party, but while doing some job research I just came across Caltrans Earth (http://earth.dot.ca.gov/), a web-based custom interface to Google Earth. It has a bunch of layer controls, but the handiest one from my perspective is the Postmile Lookup tool -- just click on the map and it displays the route, county abbreviation and postmile. It makes Caltrans map request forms a lot easier to fill out.
