Survey Field Supervisor: City of San José

The Public Works Department has the primary responsibility to deliver facilities and infrastructure that meets the needs of the residents of San José and comply with the standards and requirements established in the engineering guidelines and the City's Master Plans. The Department achieves its goals through planning, design and construction of the City's capital projects, and also through the plan review and permit process to regulate and facilitate private development projects.
Position and Duties
As part of Engineering Services Division, the Survey Section of the Public Works Department of the City of San José is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm & sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following: topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation.
The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill a Survey Field Supervisor position. The position requires a working knowledge of all the phases of surveying and is responsible for the overall performance of the field/office crew. Specific duties including but not limit to:
* Supervises, directs, reviews, and coordinates the activities of subordinates in conducting survey office duties.
* Reads and interprets maps, plans, and real property descriptions.
* Makes calculations, computes, and adjusts angles, distances, bearings, traverses, and elevations.
* Provides on-the-job training for survey section members.
* Researches and acquires needed data for survey work from reference field books, survey files, central files room, and County files.
* Responsible for producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software.
* Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries regarding engineering projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:
1. Education: Successful completion of high school or trade school, or possession of a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
2. Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/surveying experience of which four (4) years must have been in field surveying and two (2) years of the four (4) years field surveying work experience must have been in a position comparable to the level of a City of San Jose Instrument Person.
3. Acceptable Substitutions: Successful completion of two (2) academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college level engineering technology courses or related field may be substituted for the remaining two (2) years of non-field surveying experience. There will be no substitute for the education requirement.
4. Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.
5. Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in this country. Please be informed that the City of San Jose will not prepare or file a labor condition application with the Dept. of Labor.
