66434.b of the SMA states, “A marginal line shall be drawn completely around each sheet, leaving an entirely blank margin of one inch or 025 millimeters.â€￾ In some counties, this margin remains blank forever; while in other counties, the County Recorder will add the book, page and sheet in the margin, e.g., 225-05-1; and lastly, some counties allow the surveyor to add “Book ___ of Maps, Page ___â€￾ in the margin.

Next week, we are having a meeting with our County Recorder to discuss the pros and cons of these marginal situations. Thus, I would appreciate any insight regarding what your local recorder accepts/requires and why.

That statute seems to refer to the map as submitted for filing. Our Recorder adds the marginal Book and Page and, when appropriate, Certificate of Correction information.

It works pretty well for research purposes.

That is needed for the hole punches on the left side to fit the binding books that are used

The counties, in which I am familiar with, who did punch holes in the map required a 2 inch margin on the side which was attached to the map book. Those same counties no longer use a map book; thus, they now use a 1 inch on all four sides. Which counties still punch holes in the maps?

I think Ventura County still does - after the originals are scanned.

All of our originals are kept in a flat file.

Yolo County accepts my job number, which I always put in the lower-right corner of the margin.
