Man, what is up with the salaries on these County Surveyor positions. $27-$33 per hour in Lassen? That less than union chainman wages in So Cal. I understand it's a remote area, but that seems pretty out of touch and nearly impossible to lure anyone from outside the area. I'm kind of surprised the position is not a contracted position given the small population in that County.

As the outgoing County Surveyor of Lassen County, the reason I am leaving is to be home everyday to be with my wife who recently retired and suffers from MS. I am taking a position with the City of Redding. This is a great County to work in, yes, the salary is low, but if someone loves the outdoors this is a wonderful part of the state to live in. The people of Lassen County have made me feel very welcome here, and the county personnel are great to work with. I commuted from Red Bluff weekly so it will be nice to be home everyday. I will miss Lassen County.

I couldn't say it better about Lassen County.

Wage is a delicate and area specific issue, those of us choose to live and practice in very rural areas
have a very comfortable life, no traffic, little crime, 10 minute commute with one traffic light etc….
When I send a crew out on a public works job they make more than my hourly rate and I own the company. I am glad to give the crew kind of a bonus for that work, but those wages in the private sector would price me out of the local market.
Remember the $27 - $33 rate you speak of is usually, in the public sector, enhanced with plus, plus, plus benefits.

Looking Back: One of my Best life decisions... the paycheck was less than half. The adjustment was not quick and simple but I have no regrets.
Money is important, but beyond having a living wage... nope, not that importand

My post isn't meant to "bash" the area or the job. I'm sure there are many positives to living/working there. I just hope they can find someone though.
