Salary: Based on a seven-step salary plan. Pre-tax payroll deductions toward CalPERS contributions are required of all employees.

NOTE: Normal business hours are Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm. The Santa Clara Valley Water District offers a variety of work schedules suited to accommodate the business needs of the organization. The Land Surveying and Mapping Unit currently has a 9-80 work schedule with every other Friday off. Duties:
To supervise and participate in professional land surveying work in field surveying and data processing and/or developing plats and descriptions for right-of-way engineering support work, writing scopes of work for survey tasks, and to perform related administration work as required.

This is the full, first-line supervisory level in the surveyor series responsible for supervising the staff and work of a section within the Land Surveying and Mapping Unit. The Supervising Land Surveyor class is distinguished by its performance of licensed duties, including the responsibilities for reviewing, stamping and approving documents.
      
Key responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Oversee and direct the work of a sub-section of the Land Surveying & Mapping Unit of the District consisting of 4-7 survey staff. This includes the assessment and evaluation of staff’s work performance.
• Coordinate work requests, establishing completion dates, estimated costs and understanding what is needed for the requester’s work.
• Provide QA/QC for field survey and land division (right-of-way) work.
• Sign and seal right-of-way plats and descriptions and record of surveys.

Ideal candidate’s background includes:
• Five years of experience in the land surveying profession.
• Two years of functional or technical lead work.
• Substantial knowledge in all areas of surveying, including boundary, leveling, GPS, topography, scanning; R/W plats and descriptions, including both field and office work.
• Has substantial knowledge of principles of supervision, including coaching and mentoring, building good relationships, monitoring and documenting performance, disciplinary processes, and motivating staff
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Strong skills and/or ability in the following:
Estimating time and costs
Writing project plans for projects
Budget planning
General administrative tasks and processes

• Excellent writing and communication skills.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
Five years of increasingly responsible experience in performing engineering survey work in either a field or office environment, including two years of functional or technical lead work.

Training:
Completion of two years of college in a pre-engineering or related curriculum (civil engineering) or completion of a specialized surveying curriculum.

License or Certificate:
Possession a Professional Land Surveyor license issued by the State of California is required.

Special Requirement:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license is required.
