ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: A Survey Party Chief I is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: directs the field survey crew in performing surveys; plans and outlines procedures used to accomplish tasks; makes survey calculations; maintains records of field survey data by drawing in note form or computer entry; utilizes record maps, plans, notes, practices, and land laws; analyzes the field data for completeness and accuracy; prepares routine reports of time sheets and productivity records; meets with the public, contractors, or Department personnel to discuss or plan project; instructs and trains members of assigned survey party in the performance of their duties; resolves personnel difficulties within the party which interfere with its efficient operation; supervises the fieldwork of survey party personnel; operates survey equipment and drives survey vehicles; operates computer with surveying and office programs; drives a survey truck to various remote facilities throughout the County; and willingly accepts work assignments at other field yards and in the main office headquarters to fulfill Department needs.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Five years of experience as a Survey Technician I in the service of County of Los Angeles*, three years of which must have been in the performance of assignments operating a variety of survey equipment and assisting in the planning of survey assignments -OR- Two years of paid field survey experience in the operation of all precision instruments used by a survey crew including GPS/GNSS receivers, levels, total stations, electronic data collectors, transits, theodolites, and electronic distance measuring instruments at the level of County of Los Angeles class of Survey Technician II.**

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

LICENSE INFORMATION: All successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR (4) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class III – Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION:
*To qualify, applicants must have County status as a Survey Technician I, as evidenced by holding or having held such payroll title for the required period of time. No out-of-class experience will be accepted. Required experience must be fully met at the time of filing. NO WITHHOLDS WILL BE ALLOWED.

**Experience at the level of County of Los Angeles class of Survey Technician II is defined as operates all precision instruments used by a survey crew.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
•Possession of a Land Surveyor-In-Training certificate.
•Strong knowledge of survey software programs such as Carlson, Star-Net, and Trimble Business Center.
•Strong computer skills.

EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of two (2) parts:

Part I: A written test covering survey problems weighted 50%. Only those candidates receiving a 70% or higher on the written test portion of this examination will be eligible for the Interview. THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

Part II: An Interview weighted 50%. The interview will assess education, experience, personal fitness, and general knowledge and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility. NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

VACANCY INFORMATION: The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Works, Survey/Mapping & Property Management Division.

FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE:
Before a final appointment is made to this position, candidates are subject to security clearance which includes fingerprinting. An individual may be withheld from appointment, if he/she has a conviction record incompatible with the essential duties of the position for which he/she has applied. Any false statement or omission of material fact may cause forfeiture of employment rights.
