Under direction, plans and directs the work of a survey party performing land, topographic, and construction surveys; instructs staff in work procedures; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is responsible for directing the work of a field survey crew and for personally performing the more complex technical operations and calculations. This class is distinguished from the professional engineering classes in that the latter perform a wide variety of engineering duties requiring the completion of a four year college or university engineering curriculum.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
· Plans the details for specific survey projects organizes, assigns, directs and reviews the work of a survey party conducting preliminary, location, construction, property, topographic and other precise surveys.
· Prioritizes, schedules and coordinates requests for survey work.
· Trains staff in work procedures; recommends selection of staff, evaluates work and performs first level discipline as required.
· Checks measurements, readings and recorded data for completeness and accuracy.
· Performs the more complex field computations such as computing curves, distances, deflections, closures, bearings, and slopes.
· Records and submits field notes on the type of survey, information required, and procedures and equipment used; prepares field books, profiles and other drawings from field notes and makes necessary computations.
· Demonstrates and supervises the proper operation of the transit level, electronic distance measuring instruments and other survey equipment.
· Directs the care, cleaning and adjustment of surveying equipment including hand levels, plumb bobs, graduated rods, line rods, spring balances, and steel and cloth tapes.
· Personally performs the more difficult survey operations.
· Establishes and maintains effective work procedures and safety practices for a field crew.
· Assists in developing and implementing computer applications related to survey work.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, evaluation, and employee training and discipline.
Surveying principles, practices and equipment applying to construction, property and topographic surveying.
Safety practices pertaining to field survey work.
Mathematics, including plane trigonometry as applied to land surveying.
Use, adjustment and preventive maintenance of common surveying instruments.
Computer applications relating to surveying work.
Skill in:
Planning, assigning, supervising, reviewing and evaluating the work of others.
Training others in work procedures.
Operating, adjusting and maintaining survey instruments.
Making accurate field observations, review
in data and resolving discrepancies.
Preparing and maintaining accurate field notes, records and sketches.
Analyzing complex field surveying problems, evaluating alternatives and reaching sound conclusions.
Reading and interpreting complex maps, construction drawings and property descriptions.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must be willing to work out-of-doors under a variety of climatic and topographic conditions.
Must possess strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry survey equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
