Orange County Membership and O-Tags

Being a practice based chapter, Orange County supports the professional community. The O-Tag drill bit inventor, Teddy Ohana, is an Orange County professional land surveyor. Our firm, D. Woolley & Associates, has purchased over 10 of these O-Tag drill bits. We have set several hundred lead, tacks and tags using the O-Tag system. Each of our clients have complimented us on the professional look of the monuments.

I am the Orange County Membership Chair. We are wrapping up our successful 2016 membership drive this week. We have signed up so many people that we moved our membership operation to other chapters and increased their membership. The idea to help the state and other chapters is at the direction of Orange County leadership - Joe Padilla.

We hit our numbers - we ended up giving away several more O-Tag drill bit kits. They moved like hot cakes at the senior center on a Sunday morning. A good product and a good cause.

We were successful in hitting our goal, quickly.

The Orange County folks worked with other chapters on their membership drive. In fact, our efforts resulted in one chapter adding 27 members as of Tuesday.

The Orange County team is folding up this year's successful membership drive. We worked the phone like Jerry Lewis at a telethon. Thank you to the Orange County team, Central Office and most of all, the members and member firms that stepped up this year. I sincerely appreciate it.

I'm concerned with Padilla putting OC's chapter and certain individual's agendas first. I know this concern is shared by many who have witnessed his actions on the BOD. His votes and actions should put the interests of the entire CLSA first, before those of OC's chapter or any particular individuals.

Ron Nelms on the other hand has a proven track record of fair and honest leadership for the entire association. He is a very good choice.

Said the person that has chosen to remain nameless and faceless on this forum. The irony is thick. Let me guess, Nelms is all about tranparency, like you? Especially at the last Executive Committee meeting in Sacramento when he presented a motion to withhold financial information from the Board of Directors? Doubters, check the minutes. Thankfully, the Executive Committee voted against this idea. This is especially critical when we are facing financial issues - which includes the taxes. Joe has always stood up for full disclosure to members.

Lastly, it is funny how you have "concern shared by many...". Historically, this perception is shared by less than 10 people at the Board of Directors meeting when counting votes. I will remind you - faceless and nameless man - under Joe Padilla's leadership the Orange County Chapter has been the biggest chapter in the state for several years running. In fact, this year alone Orange County doubled in size again - hardly the mark of someone that is running an unfavorable agenda. When other chapters and/or individual members need a favor Orange County always steps up, always. Count among our members the past presidents from other chapters - we have no less than 5 or 6.

Padilla has always stood for transparency. It is especially important now as we continue to try to unwind years of poor financial record keeping and -according to the exact words of the CPA consultant - "incompetantly prepared taxes".

It is disappointing to again not be surprised at certain individual's usage of argumentum ad hominem methodology to distract from the message. It is also disappointing to again hear misinformation from these same individuals, to also distract from the message.
So, back to the message and factual basis.
February 6, 2016, Padilla was interviewed by the BOD during his competing for a member-at-large seat on CLSA's Executive Committee. Padilla was asked point blank if he would put OC Chapter's interests first, before that of the interests of CLSA as a whole. He explained in detail that yes he would put OC Chapter's interests ahead of those of CLSA as a whole. He subsequently lost the seat by a majority vote of the close to 60 Directors. It is safe to assume those voting directors took note of his misplacement of loyalty not only as admitted to during the interview, but also as displayed in many of his actions over the years. A vote for Padilla is a vote misplaced.

Ian, As you know Michael McGee does not spell his name as you have suggested. That is evident from the spelling on the Past Presidents letter wherein he and others stated they had vetted the books while making false charges against me. The credibility of all the individuals who signed that letter has harmed the association.

Mr./Ms.Magee/Stan Myron, reveal yourself. Come out from the shadows. Do not hide behind the veil. You are harming the association.

It is a fact that Ron Nelms sought to obscure financial records. It is in the Executive Committee minutes. To be more precise, there was a financial worksheet provided by the management company’s CPA to the Executive Committee. There were two or three Directors, of which I was one, in attendance. The motion was not to allow the Directors (“guest”) to keep copies of the financial worksheets. The rational provided was that we may share it with people outside of the room, other directors.

Yes, this was the same meeting in which Nelms' irrational outburst, quite literally, alarmed our management company’s staff - enough so they excused themselves to call their supervisors. I was there when they excused themselves. However, it was only later that the Executive Committee was told what had happened. To his credit, Nelms later apologized to the management staff.

I was at the February 6th meeting referenced. The Member at Large is a position on the Executive Committee. This position is responsible represent and inform the CLSA membership and the Directors. Joe Padilla understands this obligation. He is accountable to the members – which includes, but is not limited to, the biggest chapter in the state, Orange County. I cannot imagine Joe would make his obligation exclusive to Orange County -he knows the duties of the position. Restated, this is Joe Padilla’s position – it is a member organization and we are accountable to the members. He believes in open and transparent governance. Joe Padilla’s nomination came from the membership in accordance with the bylaws.

As CLSA moves to patch up years of financial records and amending several years of tax returns we need the Executive Committee, the Financial Committee, to be open and transparent with the Directors and the membership. This is why I believe Joe Padilla is the better candidate. It’s not a popularity contest – it is a business decision. A good business decision. We need a person that can work with the management company, not scare them.

I would welcome any information contradicting anything I have stated here.
