I searched but couldn't find that directory of old surveyor numbers that was posted here a few years ago. Anyone have a link?

I'm trying to track down any information about M. A. Nisse who surveyed a canal in Capay, CA back in 1877. I have two deeds that reference his survey. In one of them it's spelled "Nisse" and in the other, "Nurse." I don't know which is correct but my hunch is the former.

ps: finding yourself listed in Historical Records makes you feel very old :-(

Yes, I think that was the list I was thinking about. But his survey was in 1877, apparently pre-dating the new LS Act in 1891.

A Google search of M.A. Nisse yielded no results, but I located 'Nurse, M.A., C.E. Capay, Cal.' in Issue 1 of The American Engineering Register (1885 publication date).

I researched the Eugene Lockton archives (Marin County) for Dane Ince, of San Francisco Surveying Co., Inc. about a year ago.

Dane is a tenacious one . . . visited the State Library in Sacramento and found an 1878 map of the subject subdivision he was working within.

You might find a map there? Give Dane an email and he might be able to share his knowledge of the State Library.

Would love to hear what kinds of records pertinent to our work exist in the State Library, including how they might be organized.

There are no surveyor's licensed before 1891. He could have be licensed latter and then he would have an LS number after 1891. A thought occurs to me that the survey could be in swamp and overflowed land and there may be an S&O survey available from the county surveyor's office. The surveyor general held the S&O records up until those archives were taken over by State lands. The state archive could possibly have some records, if they had been sent to the archive.
