Final Point - Thoreau

To Harrison Blake at Worcester
Concord, February 27, 1853
Mr. Blake, — I have not answered your letter before because I have been almost constantly in the fields surveying of late. It is long since I have spent many days so profitably in a pecuniary sense; so unprofitably, it seems to me, in a more important sense. I have earned just a dollar a day for seventy-six days past; for, though I charge at a higher rate for the days which are seen to be spent, yet so many more are spent than appears. This is instead of lecturing...I have not only cheap hours, but cheap weeks and months.

Yesterday, I had the distinct privilege of attending the dedication of a Final Point for Henry Thoreau in Concord, Massachusetts. My dear friend Curt Sumner, NSPS President, officiated. As always, he did a magnificent job. The ceremony meant a lot to me as I grew up in Boston and performed many surveys before relocating to San Diego in 1976.

I also ran into my friend Don Poole, a brilliant Land Surveyor from Cape Cod. He is lecturing today on the Massachusetts Land Court System. If anyone has an interest in Land Court, you should reach out to Don to have him speak. I also got to spend some time with Pat Chura, author of a book on Thoreau and land surveying. He and I lectured at a conference in Massachusetts several years ago. He too is brilliant.
In addition to running into other acquaintances, my cherished friends Frank and Suzanne Fitzpatrick from San Diego were in attendance. Besides surveying, we have a special bond as Suzanne, and I grew up in the same neighborhood.
