Hi,

I have been requested to opine on the adding of notes to a previously signed mylar final map. A suggestion of adding them via "Sticky back" was made.
I have never seen this allowed in in 40 years in the business. Is this a NEW acceptable method ?

Wonder if I am missing something from section 66434 (a) ?

The Recorder will not accept it, for starters.

You must get the permission of everyone who signed it and the note must be in black ink

Can it be a sticky back note ? or must it be printed directly onto the mylar surface ?

Sounds like something for a Certificate of Correction.

I don't think sticky back is allowed on any filed maps (or maps to be filed).

Who is asking for this?

A particular engineer, because a signature block was omitted from the final map, and is now required. The map has been routed and signed by all. Permission has been granted to add the note using sticky back media. I just now rejected this as it violates Government Code Section 66434 (a) which states "guaranteeing a permanent record . . . . etc. . . . " I am MOST certain a sticky back media is not permanent.

I remember bringing my Leroy set down to the Recorder's in such a case...

***but it sticks in my craw changing a document after it has been signed.

Would a Title company insure properties shown on a map that was revised AFTER it was signed by the various parties ?

If it was me, I would add another sheet and get everyone's permission. it is okay to erase and revise as long as everyone knows.

I have added additional notes by hand, Leroy or otherwise. If you do not have enough room to squeeze it on, ad another sheet. In the old days, before computers and electronic map preparation, these issues came up all the time.

Does anyone remember the old hanging files in the putty colored metal cabinet? We called the elephant files. They were for important maps. I also remember finding handfuls of sticky back notes on the bottom of that cabinet. The glue had dried and the notes simply fell off the maps. Sticky backs are not permanent.

It would appear that this is a perfect example of an Amending Map.

If the map has not yet been filed, I am not sure there is anything to amend. Add another sheet, get the written consent of everyone who signed it, and move on.

initial and date for each signature in the margin works for many documents...

or just edit the Map as needed and send it around for proper signatures.

Good suggestion! This can be relatively easy.

I believe in 66434 (a) the second sentence answers your question.
Certificates, affidavits, and acknowledgments may be legibly stamped or printed upon the map with opaque ink.
I would personally say that sticky backs would not qualify as that and as Ian said they sticky backs get old and can fall off, or be removed later by somebody.

In days of yore, the maps were all covered by stickies. We then had the mylar photographically imaged.

I do remember the days of having photo mylars made for the filings, I think Hal Davis was still doing that up to right before he got will and stopped working.

I did that. Some counties still "require" mylars to be photo mylars.
