This sketch was done by Noel Graves in Aug. 1904, prepared as a key for angles turned to points of prominence in Salmon River Country, Siskiyou County, CA.

Brian . . . those notes were a TEN!!!!

When I was a lowly instrumentman, my mentor was John Bolin. Bolin taught me to take "naturals" just like your posted notes. Even today, we take naturals whenever we can.

Coincidentally, yesterday we found our 1997 control point and discovered a two-inch iron pipe was sliding downhill and is no longer plumb. However, in 1997 from our control point we turned angles to Alcatraz light and were able to find an old wood hub (and determine that the 2" pipe is moving downhill). Perpetuated the original hub with a pipe. And saved redoing a gawd-awful traverse that would have taken six hours of brushing to perform.

Another benefit of "naturals" is traversing to short foresights. Making the short foresight along the natural . . . when you move up to your foresight . . . you have a long backsight for better angular measurements. ('Course I'm preachin' to the choir on that one . . .)

Attached are some sketches that PALE(!!) compared to your beautiful post, Brian. (Maybe 50 years from now these may seem significant.)

When I was looking for work, many years ago, I had a copy of sole old field notes I prepared in 1974, some 46 years ago. It was a notable project back in Boston many moons ago.

Back then, we used to tie out every control station.

I still prepare old school notes. Have you ever seen Pafford's notekeeping book? If you are interested, I can send you a copy. it was too large to attach through the forum.

There is nothing better than hand drawn/prepared notes!
