I just looked over a map for an internal project that will be going to another agency within Alameda County.

The crew found a 3" brass disk with a raised portion like a dimple but rising up from the surface instead of down. It looks a bit like the old leveling disks we used to set for vertical benchmarks.

When you stop laughing at the question, please provide any politically correct names. Does anyone have nomenclature for the disk?

Be it known to all surveyors submitting maps to Alameda County for review: the official term for any brass disk with a raised point intended for use as the actual point of measurement shall henceforth be called a "Button Disk".

There is nothing wrong with calling it a nipple disc. it is the best term.

It is akin to describing a male and female connector.

I used to say "disk with nipple" but I the last couple of times I have said "disk with raised center"

We use these monuments on the regular - sure beats a concrete nail.

All previous maps in Alameda County have described them as "County Brass Disc w/ Nipple". Clear, concise, and to the point (no pun intended).
It is not politically incorrect to call it what it is, as it is not being sexist. Last time I checked, both males and females have them if your concerned, and it is even acceptable for males to have theirs exposed in public.

Why make a mole hill out of an ant hill, unless your running scared?

Ian, take a picture to show others what we are talking about. I looked in my collection of monuments (for MDSHS) and do not have a County disc w/ nipple.
