I'm supposed to set some 1-1/2" IP (per Final Map) and I am having a hard time finding a cap that will fit where I can get my license punched on it. Any suggestions? I've already tried Berntsen and Surv-Kap.

We used to set the aluminum caps that go on a rebar, and concrete the rebar and cap inside the pipe.

Nail and metal tag inside the pipe? How large does your tag need to be?

Plastic caps, while allowed in a number of places are not always particularly durable - bt that may depend somewhat on where you are and the specifics of the climate in your area.

Tags aren't the issue. The description is "1-1'2" capped IP stamped." Any place that would sell caps that I could get stamped?

Any chance you can negotiate "down" with the local agency? I had something similar here, which originally stated "copper disks" among other things, and I was able to convince them on the Berntsen 2" aluminum caps for 1" iron pipe.

(On a separate matter the caps I received from Berntsen did not allow room for pipe mushrooming whatsoever and I am still investigating this with them)

I need to ask to see where exactly we buy ours. Most companies which sell brass caps offer a stamping service. We buy them in bulk. any minor stamping which may be requires, like in case of a section corner is done by hand in the field.

For example, Surv Kap sire gives you an engraving option when you purchase... but a lot of caps need to be purchased in bulk.

This is why a lot of surveyors who do smaller projects get a big bag of just brass tags, pre engraved, and use concrete filled IP's.
Spending an extra half an hour per monument setting 6 monuments is a heck of a lot cheaper than having to buy 250 pre engraved brass caps at $40 a piece.

How many monuments do you need to set?

Are you using a pipe driver? In my experience they pretty much eliminate any internal deformation.

No and I'm sure that could help in general, but the diameter of the plastic sleeve inside the cap matched the outer diameter of the pipe before driving it. So I question if there was something inherently off with the batch. I was told that the sleeve diameter was greater than 1-1/4" but mine was pretty much that size.

A fellow surveyor noted "set spike & washer stamped...". He would set the s&w inside a concrete filled 2" I.P. driven flush (or lower).
