It looks as though there were 20 new LS in Riverside/San Bernardino County. Of those 15 were "graduates" of the LS Review Seminars!

That would mean that 75% of the new LS took the 2008 Riverside/San Bernardino Chapter Seminar!

Of the 142 new LSs in the state, more than 10% participated in the 2008 Riverside/San Bernardino Chapter Seminar!!!

I was one of three that received our PLS through the benefit of the Channel Islands Chapter review course (thanks again Debbie & Misha).

The East Bay Chapter put on a review class for the first time this past year and we had at least 4 that took the class pass.

It may be worthwhile to include those that passed via a review course offered by a Caltrans District Office in lieu of a CLSA Chapter. I believe that the Los Angeles District Office offered a review course. I think statewide, the Caltrans guys/ladies contributed a significant chunk of the passing candidates.

Although I took the review course through my local CLSA Chapter, I also downloaded the Caltrans study guide and their course videos and used them to supplement my study plan. Great study material for a bargain basement price of $0.00.

The East Bay Chapter did have a 5th person pass. He only attended the first of the LS review classes and while I'd like to think my Test Strategy presentation helped him in some small way, his success was probably due more to his own study program.

The Chapters (and Caltrans) efforts to produce LS review classes have helped many to focus their studies. However the bulk of recognition should go to the individuals for their personal efforts to gain the knowledge to pass.

The Channel Islands Chapter's 2008 LS Review Seminar Series produced 3 new LS's. Additionally, reviewing past rosters, we had two more from our 2007 class, two more from our 2006 class, and a few others from prior years. I suspect those from previous years have been able to build on our class by additional study and probably by attending additional classes. Perserverance has surely made the difference. I agree that the bulk of recognition should go to the individuals for their personal efforts to gain the required knowledge to pass the exam.

Since a "pass list" was not available, I checked with license lookup, one number at a time. The first number issued for the 2008 exam was 8411, the last number issued (as of right now) was 8552. We will most likely see more added after the board meeting next week.

I passed the PLS this past April, so I was a little surprised to be asked to help out with the the 2009 LS Exam seminar by my local chapter. Didn't take long to make the decision. I couldn't think of a better way to show my appreciation to those that volunteered their time to help me prepare. Although I am an LS rookie, having been licensed as a civil engineer for 25 years, I am more comfortable covering the "Construction" portion, than most of the other subjects. Although the Subdivision Map Act would have been right up my alley since my job deals with tentative map and final/parcel maps every day. I would encourage other "rookies" to get involved with their local chapters and do what they can to "give back". By the way, hopefully all 142ish of us "rookies" have already taken up CLSA on their generous membership offer.

Another great way for "rookies" to get involved is to volunteer to take the "field test" of the exam.

The value of that is that it gives the writers of the exam a reality check on the level of difficulty of the questions and the time it takes to complet each portion of the exam.

It works best if those taking the field test are newly licensed and still at or near that "minimal competence" level that the exam is aimed for.
