It's Official: I Have Relocated...

I have officially closed my land surveying practice in Temecula, Ian Wilson Land surveying, Inc., and have accepted a terrific position as Director Surveys with the Roseville office of a dynamic, multi-discipline company called WRG Design, Inc. The company is based in Portland, Oregon, and has offices in seven states across the country.

The company philosophy and attitude to our clients, projects and each other is a mirror image of my own. I know some of you will have a hard time believing that there are actually a collection of people on the planet with my sense of humor and “decorumâ€￾, but there are and I found ‘em!

Now, as part of a great team of engineers, landscape architects, development specialists and surveyors, I’m in an even better position to continue the same level of client-care I have strived to achieve in my practice. Neil, Tommy, Rich, Mike, Jason, Rob, Lara, Leslie, Steve, and the rest of the crew in Roseville have given me a warm welcome. I’m excited to be here and working with such a talented bunch of people. I’m looking forward to working hard and playing hard in my new-found home in Roseville.

Boy, howdy, though, Roseville is clearly much closer to the Arctic Circle! Being just a few degrees further north than Temecula, it sure gets darker faster and stays that way later! I suppose that just means more daylight for staking during the summers though.

I still have a number of projects underway in Temecula and will be finishing those up as soon as possible. I will not be accepting any new clients under the guise of IWLS, Inc, though.

To all of you in the Riverside/San Bernardino Chapter: carry on the good work, outreach and grow that we have enjoyed for the past handful of years. The chapter is a tremendous resource for professionals, those aspiring to be professionals and the public. If you’re not active in a leadership role, either in the chapter or within your own company, I encourage you to get involved, whatever level of registration you hold. You, the chapter and your colleagues will benefit.

To those of you in the Sacramento Chapter: I’ll see you at the next Chapter Meeting. A Base Line in the Roseville area (OK, I’m thinking ahead…) would be a fantastic resource for us all. See you at the Old Spaghetti Factory on the 6th!

As you mentioned it stays lighter longer up north, actually it is just better air quality, and the smog doesn't filter the sunlight as much, heheheee. Now that we got you in the northern part of the state, maybe I'll connect with you too.

I'm really looking forward to this position. The people I'm now working with are a talented bunch. I intend to work to acquaint them with CLSA and increase the company's presence within CLSA.

Larry - if you want hot, how about a topo survey along the 40 in Needles in August at 120ºFplus? My old Caltrans T2000 decided it was too hot, went black and shut down... However...Ab diving sounds intriguing. One of my new colleagues is an avid Ab diver, too! BTW - where the heck are the bugs up this way?

You're the guy who burnt up the T2000 when I was at CT. You’ve been famous for a while! I remember being told to keep the instrument shaded if it was over 100 degrees, but wasn't aware the problem occurred at 120 degrees. Did a couple of golf courses in Vegas where the temp was that hot. Lucky it was GPS and aerial targets.

I had my CT crew working in a continuous down pour; most of the work was under the highway on an off ramp, except for the instrument person & T2000. The instrument had to be sent to the shop, but I got the job done. I had to pull back on my exuberance level after that. LOL

You want bugs; we'll have to take you fly-fishing. Can you say Pit River? Or if you’re into a few more people, you can go up to Tahoe/Truckee.

I've had the stuff and it's good! I read an article in LA Times about how dangerous it is though. They won't let you bring any air and some people end up dead because they get tangled in the seaweed or crash against the rocks.

Hint-beware of any boundary survey inside the city limits of the City of Sacramento. This ain't L.A. A normal monument is a 1-1/2" magnail and a major monument is a 2-1/2" magnail ;-)
