Carlson
Carlson has a lot of bang for the buck in my opinion, and is programmed with surveyors in mind. As a result, some of the stuff it does is amazing. The only tuff part was doing DTM's. It's more 3D based and not project based (although they have a file you can save with the breaklines in it) so it takes a little getting us to (like if you don't shoot both TC and FL). But they have ways to address that.
The line work ease of use is far superior. They even have a command where it will read all your point codes and incorporate it into the auto linework for you. Not bad!
I've used LD for about 18 years (back before it was LD). I'm a expert at it and have used it for auto linework too. However, it's been laid out to pasture and Civil 3D is not a Land Surveyor's CAD platform. It's for Architects and Engineers. Don't be fooled.
Carlson is an AutoCAD engine, so all its DWG files are compatible with Civil and LD.
