Mark: I appreciate the thought about posting another's work, but I feel it is quite OK. I believe the surveyor gives up the right to that kind of privacy when it goes to record, unless it is one of mine that I am not supper proud of, then it is another matter.

in this case I expect Phil would be proud; that map is true art...
I believe he had a great story about that survey but I have forgotten it.

There was a Marin County surveyor that probably inspired Phil with this one: Eugene Lockton was the name I believe. I have seen several but have no copies here.
Maybe someone could post a few of his to befit this impromptu Art Gallery.

Mark:

That was the first thought I had when I saw someone else's work being posted.

The map IS public record, but, that's not the point. This thread is calling particular notice to maps and subjecting them to scrutiny beyond the sharin gof survey data. Without my permission (or me posting the map) I would not feel good about seeing one of my maps posted.

We likely ALL have a "stinker" that managed to get filed and of which we are NOT proud.

Can we all agree to limit our sharing to maps WE have filed and post OURSELVES, please?

I think it's a matter of individual judgment. If a record map is posted for legitimate instructive purposes, I don't believe anyone's permission is necessary. (Even if it's one of mine that I would prefer remain buried in the archives.) On the other hand, posting someone else's map primarily for the purpose of subjecting that person to ridicule would be a breach of professional courtesy.

ROS examples

Post by mpallamary »

Hi Ian,

For what it is worth, I have presented numerous lectures involving other people's surveys. When I do, I redact any identifying data out of discretion and courtesy. See the attached as an example. When I present like that, I run the powerpoint and I do not give out copies. These are all recorded maps but I agree with your sentiments. This forum should be uplifting and inspiring and not critical and damning.

As an aside, as I understood the forum request, it was an invitation to submit some of an individual's own work and not that of another.

I hope that spirit continues. These are all good examples. They have the added benefit of stimulating others to strive higher and do a better job and I think that was the intent.

Onward and upward.

'95 Mapping winner . . . more art than survey

Post by hellsangle »

The attached, 505-M-3 Sonoma County Records, was submitted and won the 1995 NSPS cadastral mapping contest. Needless to say . . . times were slow. As Ehlert points out . . . there is a story hidden on the map.

And as Peter also remembers, the CalSurveyor's cartoonist, Sergio Saturnio Labaroto De Faria, (we just call him "Nino"). . . was employed by Eugene Lockton (CLSA President 1973). Nino and I would have artsy-fartsy Record of Survey competitions between ourselves . . . Oh if we could print what is hidden on those maps! (It got so bad - the Marin County Surveyor banned such artwork . . . that is . . . until his Chief of Surveys, Don Thomas drew one of the most beautiful North Arrows . . . on a County Record of Survey . . . and from there forward . . . Nino and I were back at it!)

Here goes. . . but first a little history to understand the story behind the story:
1). WWII my father was radioman on USS Washington (BB56)
2). When I was a kid, he taught me Morse code. In my nerdy teenage years I was amateur radio operator WN6VOO. I loved CW (Morse code) and was told by recipients of my calls - I had a "NAVY" hand. Which was quite a compliment.
3). An old high school buddy (Pat W.) of mine purchased some billy-goat property on the east side of Sonoma Valley in Jack London's Valley of the Moon.
4). Pat wanted an Lot Line Adjustment
5). Pat was a full-time fireman with Valley of the Moon F.D. and on his off days worked as a instrumentman and/or chainman with me at my former employer.
6). Things were awefully SLOW . . . but better than today. Pat took pity upon me and employed me . . . at GREAT rates!
7). I did survey with Pat's friend Ken R. another volunteer fireman.
8). too much information, Phil . . . they're fallin' asleep you anal b . . .stard!
9). My friend Pat's father (Floyd) was a Floor Engineer for Channel 7 (KGO) nightly news in San Francisco and was too an amateur radio operator. (forgot his call sign) Like we'd give a chit, Phil! get on with it . . . the coffee is working and I might have to re-read Wilusz' rag . . . which by the way, Phil, has gotten more professional!

So here goes . . .
I'm tryin' to get as much "bang" out of this Record of Survey as possible . . . and go for an entirely metric survey scale in metric and course-lengths in meters.
(Oh I forgot to tell you . . . I'm a Francophile . . . which is in NO WAY related to that bad kind of phile!
As the Metric system started in France . . . I thought " . . . let's go metric, Phil"! Judy Frank sent me a pic that I published in the POSTCARDs section of the CalSurveyor of "Zero/Zero" . . . a bronze disk in a church in Paris . . . where it kinda all began)

Well the attached map if I remember how to attach . . . is the metric map.

Buried all over the map . . . in Morse Code and further encrypted in French is a story. (At the time I was studying French . . . for that hasn't-happened-yet trip to France. French-side story: In high school I studied French from a Mr. Borland . . . who promised me a "D" if I never came back to his French class again. I took the "D"! ha.)

Around the border of the map . . . is the "who" of Pat W's family (who I happened to be the Godfather, or you might say - the Don, of his son Jacob is also buried in there . . .)

In the lower left . . . the chaining cherubs . . . is some Morse acknowledging our Map Checker, Steve Fredricks.

At the time . . . my friend Pat was dating this gorgeous Sonoma County Park Ranger, Janet . . . almost as pretty as my wife . . . who he also dated . . . but that's another LONGER story . . . ha.

Well, Pat wants to "pop the question" to his beau . . . and I thought . . . let's "memorialize" it on your Record of Survey and if she rejects your proposal of marriage . . . we can all razz you and point to the map on O'connor's wall at the Sonoma County Surveyor's Office . . . place our thumb and extended index finger over our forehead . . . and shout LOSER!

So . . . in the BASIS OF BEARINGS . . . in Morse Code . . . further encrypted in French - so Map Checker, Fredricks, wouldn't catch it . . . in the event he knew Morse Code like my Eighth Grade English teacher, Ms. Provan . . . who happend to be a telegrapher during WWII . . . and Stupid Phil, et al happened to be a bit miffed at her over an assignment . . . and Stupid Phil writes some diatribe in Morse Code at the bottom of his English paper . . . and somehow Stupid Phil wound up the Principal Osbourne's Office . . . and Stupid Phil . . . rode some pine at home for a week . . . how the hell did I get here? Where was I?

Oh yes, she accepted his proposal . . . and everyone lived happily ever after . . .

The End . . . And I'll bet you all are glad of THAT!

Now - go wash your hands ( . . . and put the seat down so we don't get in trouble!)

When I see your name on this board . . . it brings a smile to my face " . . . I remember that guy! Used to belong to Sonoma Chapter!" We all miss ya up on Slonoma County, Peter. Hope all is well with you . . . and hopefully now that you're closer to the water . . . you're also building your sailing-time! Heck, maybe have a three-mast by now?! ha!
Best,
