Deed research in Contra Costa Co.

I am having trouble doing research at the recorders office. I have a name and a book and page of official records, yet I am unable to unlock the keys to the kingdom. unfortunately I do not have dates for the deeds otherwise I would just go to the grantor-grantee index. thanks for your help.
