Well, it appears that

spike and tins existed in the centerline of the street 1985 and 1986 according to the two CR's. Two inch iron pipes also existed on portions of the exterior.

So I think ole JP set those puppies. If there are no ties in the curbs, maybe they were chisled pluses? JP may still be alive, although you can never tell. Call or write him and find out.

Too bad no tie notes. Someone at the city misfiled them or didn't make JP submit them. All I know is that isn't my fault.

BoundaryMan

We contacted the City this morning and they are going to look through their files to see what paper trail remains. Send me your email address to:
dhunter@dslextreme.com and I will contact you next week with what turns up.

Howdy,

Quick comment. I used to establish control and BOB with only one physical monument on the ground. Years ago, I ran most of my control by shooting solar shots. If done right, it is amazingly accurate. You just need a real good timepiece.

Michael,

Would you consider the solar object a no tag/no reference monument? ;-)

I am sure you have forgotten more that I will likely learn in the rest of my career. I always look forward to the perspective and experience you bring to any of the discussions in this forum. Thanks

Dave & subman, thank you so much, I will contact both of you shortly.

Mr. Pallamary,
I am very interested to learn solar shot. Can you please shed some light on how to do solar shot with total station? A procedure may be?

Solar shots

Post by Dave Lindell »

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, do solar shots with a total station unless you have a filter for your objective lens.

(Unless of course you want to fry your instrument's innards.)

Solar and Celestial Observation

Post by mpallamary »

As noted, NEVER use a total station for a solar. You will fry the electronics. When I did them, I used (and still have) a very good T2. I would shoot a solar in reverse onto an image and as long as I know the time, lat, and long, and have an ephemeris, I know where I am. All of my field crews were trained in solar readings. many a time when we or they were out in the back country, all they had to do was find one monument and once we knew where north was, we could search for the others. it worked every time. Indeed, I have filed many a survey using a celestial observation and years later when I dump state plane coordinates on a site, I am hitting north within 5 or 6 seconds. I suppose it is a lost art but really, is not very difficult. As opposed to using a filter, I use the "trailing edge" method. You should view the sun through an inverted image and watch how quickly it moves. Its relative speed as observed through a reticle is absolutely amazing and as you can learn, the speed bears a direct correlation to accuracy.

My old friend John Sands prepared the attached document.

Yes, it is old school but a very good way to get oriented.

As an aside, when I teach LS review or any related classes, the first thing I do is have the students calculate the bearing and distance between two coordinates without a calculator by using trig tables and longhand math. What's the point they say? My response, if you don't understand how the math works, you'll never understand what you are doing. Anyone can push a button but only a skilled and qualified land surveyor understands what the buttons did. Alas, it is the button pushers that mostly get into trouble. Button pushing = technician. Comprehensive understanding of higher mathematics and survey analysis = professional land surveyor.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Lee,

As far as I know there is a city surveyor in Glendale...Mark Price was it as of about a year ago.

Good luck.

The correct spelling is "Shiner". Two n's is poor spelling.

It has always fascinated me that supposedly intelligent and educated people can be such lousy spellers. I was better than some PHD's when in Jr. High.

Lee,

I personally never claimed to be a perfect typist. When I took the class in H.S. I failed the first 9 weeks and averaged a D for both semesters.
