Question...

Post by Ian Wilson »

When surveying and stationing a stream, do the stations increase looking up stream or down stream?

This is a question that came up during a discussion today.

I put my answer out, but was not able to corroborate it with a reference to any of the books on my shelf.

Anyone?

The FEMA Appendix M Data Capture Standards has the naming convention for cross section and structure surveys increasing upstream and field coding looking downstream left to right. A little confusing, but makes sense if you're in a boat.

I thought it was upstream, but that's a bit of inormation I picked up somewhere that I can provide absolutely no reference to.

It may just be how I've always seen it done at the knee of my elders in the profession, which tends to translate into the "right" way of doing things from my perspective.

This is a little confusing, but stationing increases as you go upstream, but if you are referring to right or left bank when writing a description it is from the perspective of being in the boat and floating downstream.

in a general "stream survey" station could be best served as upstream from the confluence or mouth, which in itself varies.

As pointed out above, a deed can be written and stationed as left bank or right bank . . .(up or down) starboard or port , , ,etc.

Soooo . . .it depends upon the the dictating action . . .DEED, state . . .random ? confluence ? Mouth ? or maybe where Filo Blake killed the "Bare"

as with most of our applications, research is necessary PRIOR to making a hip-shot call . . . .

Good thread !!! I like it :-)

P.S. shall i define Confluence and mouth ??? ( seriously)
