And

Only is Surveying............would you use canned cat food lids as tins on your spikes.
Only in Surveying............would you purchase cotton gin spindles for control when the farmer next door would give them to you for free.
Only in Surveying...........would you cut down a 75' pine tree when there is only a 2" limb preventing you from getting a great shot.
Only in Surveying...........can your charge your client $2000 for putting a 2' long piece of metal in the ground.

and my favorite of all time

Only in Surveying..........would your chainman try to bleed out a quart of oil from the drain plug on your truck for the chainsaw. Not so bad but that oil is flippen hot.

"Only in Surveying...........can your charge your client $2000 for putting a 2' long piece of metal in the ground."

Actually, that one's a bit of a raw subject. I don't charge $2000 to put a 2' long pipe in the ground. I charge $3000 for knowing where it goes, for mapping where I put it and for having the authority to put it in the ground and file the map and for the LIABILITY for doing it.

What other profession uses thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment to listen to signals coming from billions of dollars’ worth of satellites in space and then use thousands of dollars’ worth of computers and software to calculate a position on the ground so we can go and pound a couple of buck’s worth of iron pipe in the ground using a 16 pounds sledge hammer. Of course, we’re in jeans and boots when we do this. Then, we’re in a suit and tie defending what we did in court the next day! How’s that for absurd?

"Only in surveying......do you get more excited about finding a stone with some graffiti on it than if you found a gold nugget"

If I found a gold nugget as big as a typical monument stone, I think I would retire so that I could survey as a hobby. Which brings up...

Only in surveying......would can someone who gets paid to sit at a desk get excited about doing entry level work of digging for chunks of iron, wood, and stone, and doing it on their day off.

and then the chainman buys 3 quarts from the neighbor for $6/qt just so he does have to call the office.

How about the rookie you opens his pudding cup at 7000'

Sorry about that Ian, that is not what I was trying to say.

You are right, that is a raw subject. Some people think surveyors charge too much for what you get.

How many times have you had to explain to your client it’s going to cost them $????? to set their corner and they look at you with that blank look.

I understand what it takes and was just poking fun at what I have heard in the past.

Sorry if I offended you.

Only in Surveying do you spend thousands of dollars figuring out where to put the monument then are too cheap to put in a decent monument. And for heaven's sakes you never would spend more than 2 minutes setting a monument. It took 10 thousand dollars to get here but a $20 brass capped monument is too expensive. That's my pet peeve.
