Misnomer

Post by Jim Frame »

Calling this forum Classifieds is misleading, as evidenced by job postings that show up here rather than in the Employment Hotline forum. Since this rarely-used forum is almost exclusively used for buy-sell postings (with the exception of the misplaced employment posts), it ought to be retitled.

Glad I got that off my chest. :)

Not the forum's fault - more like operator error.

My point is that the forum is misleading the operators. As we all (at least all of us old guys) know, the term "classifieds" comes from the newspaper realm, which makes a distinction between custom advertisements -- which range in size from a little box to a full page, and are intermixed with the news content -- and classified advertisements. The latter are small ads grouped together according to classifications established by the publisher. The classifications include things like autos for sale, homes for rent, pets for sale, and employment opportunities.

So it's reasonable for someone to think that a job offer should be posted under Classifieds, since that's the way it's done in the newspaper industry. But here we have a separate forum for job openings, which results in some job ads appearing in the Employment Hotline forum, and some showing up in the Classifieds forum. It's a schizophrenic arrangement.

The only reason I brought it up is that I'm always interested in seeing who has what equipment for sale. When a job ad is posted in the Classified section, its title appears in the Last Post column of the main forum page, which means I have to go to the Classifieds forum to see if there are any new equipment-for-sale ads.

I don't actually expect anything to change, I just wanted to gripe.

For Sale

You're right, Jim. The title should be changed to 'For Sale'.

That'll learn 'em.
