How many of us sign and seal construction staking diagrams that we provide to builders/ contractors? A strict reading of the code indicates we should:

(d) All final maps, plats, reports, descriptions, or other land surveying documents issued by a licensed land surveyor or civil engineer authorized to practice land surveying shall bear the signature and seal or stamp of the licensee and the date of signing and sealing or stamping. . . . .

This came up during an office discussion in which I was telling an assistant that everything that goes out the door needs to be signed and stamped. "That's our product, that's what the client is paying for, that's all the liability condensed to an 1-1/2 inch minimum ink circle." I described a scenario from the past that nearly turned ugly due to a civil engineer's passing along of an office exhibit to a client. It was well intended at the time, but the document was misused. It almost sank the ship. All this unbeknownst to the Land Surveyor, who may not have even known of the existence of an exhibit at the time. A document was issued. And today's office assistant asks "well, what about . . .?"

How many point sheets have been given to site site superintendants to help them relate to the 150 lathe that popped up during the course of the day? Does the Land Surveyor in responsible charge review the plat or does the party chief just leave a copy of the point sheet with the super, offsets sketched in, deviations indicated, and notes included? Cut sheets are documents related to land surveying that are issued at the end of a day of staking. I expect very few Land Surveyors sign and stamp cut sheets before they are issued.

I sign and seal (RCE or PLS) on certifications and/or change orders only.

Because we put something in the ground does not mean the builder will use it. Even if he does, it does not mean he will use it correctly.

Always. The City inspectors want a wet signed survey.
