Upgrading Leica 1200 for longer Reflectorless range

I have a Leica 1200 with R100, I need to replace the EDM board and am being told that I can upgrade to a R300 (for additional cost) I have been less than happy with the range of the current reflectorless (the gun is great with a prism) My question is how has this worked for others with the R300 to see if I should spend the $'s. I do simple topo maps and would like to reflectorless to easily add neighboring houses, poles, perhaps resection with a new setup, etc. Is this old technology that I should not bother with or is this a good idea?
