Lion country

Post by LS 4722 »

This sign is about 1/2 mile south of where tomorrows job is. The last time I saw a mountain lion, 10 years or so ago, was at the north end of De Soto Avenue while working on a gas company project.

Remember safety tip, you don't have to be faster than a mountain lion, just faster than your buddy/coworker

There is a mountain lion living in Jackson Demonstration State Forest (Mendocino County near Fort Bragg). I spend a lot of time there but I haven't seen the lion, just a 30" redwood tree it used for a scratching post. I wouldn't want to be the cat's scratching post, the tree bark was shredded.

The big cats give me the willies when I'm hiking, because it's not the cat you see that's the problem. The knowledge that they're out there -- if very, very sparsely distributed -- combined with the knowledge that they've been getting less selective about their prey due to a population/food imbalance, makes me a bit edgy on the trail.

Jim,

Time to start toting a shotgun with buckshot and slugs loaded.

Hopefully all it will be needed for if you bump into a big cat is for a really loud noise.

I would hate to have to take out a mountain lion. There aren't really enough of them in the wild.

Then you have to explain the mess to the Game Warden.
