Using a tide line for a temp bench mark

I did an architectural survey in Hermosa Beach today and took a shot on the tide line at 8: 22Am, Sept 7, 2013.

Is there a formula or some type of tables that will tell me what vertical distance that shot was from the mean sea level at that time of day?

Try not to lose much sleep over a grain of sand. Maybe if you are really lucky you may actually understand the common sense practical aspects of

I know you know the limitations of a TBM from a few tide shot, but with that said: Try the program WXTide32.exe It is a free download and quite easy to use. It will get you close.

Depends. How precise and how reliable do your elevations need to be relative to a fixed datum?

How close is your site to the nearest tide station and does it have similar characteristics to the tide station location. For instance, is your sit in a bay or on the open coast? If in a bay, is it on a side that faces the outlet or is it back behind a shoulder of land?

Getting a reliable and accurate elevation by that method depends upon where you are getting your data and what that data is based upon. Even if based on the nearest tide station, the less similarity between the conditions at your site with the conditions at the tide station, the less reliable your results.

From one side of a good sized bay to the other, tide levels can vary several tenths of a foot. If you don't have nearly identical conditions to the tide station, and if elevations need to be fairly accurate, I'd take the time to go back and find a BM tied to a fixed datum to tie your survey into.

If your on-site elevations relative to each other are fine, but a precise and reliable tie into a fixed datum are close enough (+/- a few tenths), then you should be able to find data to get you there at the site T.R. Overton linked for you.

I have done that, but we started at a BM and shot the sand until we got the elev for the tidal limit then XYd that location.

Let us assume for a moment that my understanding of the shear force dynamic interactions between sand and water along the beach has nothing to do with your "common sense practical aspects of land surveying". Let us assume that the earth sciences and engineering are completely irrelevant to your "common sense practical aspects of land surveying". Then what exactly are these "common sense practical aspects of land surveying" that you refer to?

And remember, if it weren't for the predecessors of our fine professions of land surveying and civil engineering screwing things up so badly, we would all be out of a job. So don't pull the "experience" card too quickly.
