I just use a sponge. Works great, but not appreciated on cold days as much.

WD40 and a stick works too.

It bugs me to see an old RCE number with an old rusted out iron nail driven through a brass tag. Both metals rust out. Engineers should be aware of the excessive corrosion involved with putting two dissimilar metals in contact with one another.

Drive a copper nail through a brass tag and you get no corrosion, ever.

Sponge some on and leave it for a few minutes.

I just pull it out of the ground and take it back to the office to clean....

seriously, an eraser from a number 2 pencil works well, it can even be inserted into a drill for a little more power... I only buy chrome pocket tapes for this reason you can reflect the sunlight down in the hole.

I use Indasa Rhynosoft Sponge Sanding Pads which are available in 80 to 2000 grit. They work great!

I tried the Brasso based on Paul's suggestion above.
Works great.

Small enough to carry deep into the mountains.
