Some stuff may be a little dated. The CALTRANS Manual Chapter 6 has been updated. See http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/row/landsurvey ... l_TOC.html
The NGS series of articles really needs another update to cover recent improvements in the NAD83 refrence frame too.

One source that I have found useful for learning about GPS over the last 23 years is GPS World magazine. Particularly Dr. Richard Langley's Innovation column. If you were to go thru and select a couple of dozen of those articles from the last 20+ years, I think you could learn more than attending any one semester class on GPS

From Caltrans Manual Chapter 6, Page 6-35:

"6B.3-3 Conventional RTK Field Procedures
Proper field procedures shall be followed in order to produce an effective
RTK survey. For Third-order RTK Surveys, these procedures shall
include:

The precision of the measurement data shall have a value less
than or equal to 0.03 feet horizontal and 0.03 feet vertical for each
observed station."

From Table 6B-1, Page 6-39, Third-order RTK Survey Specifications:

Horizontal precision of the measurement data for
each observation: Less than or equal to 0.03 feet

Vertical precision of the measurement data for
each observation: Less than or equal to 0.05 feet

This appears to be a discrepancy. My guess is that the table is correct regarding the maximum vertical precision required of 0.05', and the written text in the preceding page requiring a maximum of 0.03' is a typo. Of course there's always the possibility that I just don't understand what I'm looking at!

Steve Martin: Thanks for the references. Those people did great things with what they wrote. You do a great job a storing information produced by others and then sharing!!!

From my perspective, most of what is written by the great minds from academia are fantastic for the scientists but not really accessible by most of the Land Surveying community. However, we do have a definite and different need from the geophysical scientists from the same paradigms.

This is why I write the way that I write. I am intending to make complex technical subjects clear to our fellow professionals.

I have always subscribed to Einstein's thought, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough'.

It may take me awhile. But I will follow through on my promise to put forward my ideas on the topics I listed in the previous post.

BTW, I am a life long baseball. I was born in the 50's and remember in the 60's walking the mile to the local drug store to buy a pack of Topps baseball cards, chewing the gum, and reading the statistics on the back of the cards.

This was followed by heading home to watch the Baseball Game of the Week announced by Curt Gowdy!! What good memories.

I hope you get some good information out of it. I liked Jim Reilly's articles because they covered a topic in a short, simple, straightforward format.

I think I put the Record of Survey on the handout disk just as an example. I had several of my old 1st order ROSs as background information on several of the slides in the presentation leading up to the GPS Standards and Specification portion and included the source document for those interested.

If there is anything I can help you with, let me know.

Thanks for the kind words, Mike McGee. Sorry I am so late responding but my access to this forum was mysteriously blocked for several days.

I will think about your suggestion, however, at present I am disinclined to donate anything to CLSA. Particularly the fruits of my hard labor. I have no problem giving them to individuals. The only thing I want/need from CLSA is the use of this forum.

Scott: Go across the floor to Paul's desk and he can show you my legacy stuff that I left behind when I retired from Caltrans. It is on an open an accessible drive. There are about 100 folders that contain presentations, papers, classes, reports, etc that I produced. If, for some reason I did not leave behind these modules, just let me know and I will e-mail.
