Caltrans Document Request Response Time

Post by Jim Frame »

About a month ago I submitted a request for ROW and Monumentation maps via the District 4 website. The site has two request links, one that doesn't involve litigation against the state, and one that does. Because the job may involve a suit and because Caltrans may be one of the defendants, I used the latter.

I've heard nothing since. Is this a normal delay? I'm pretty much stalled until I get those maps.

P.S. If anyone happens to have maps for SOL 80 22.5 to 24.0 that they can send me, I'd appreciate it.

I would be calling somebody about this. Check out this contacts list and store the link in your favorites or bookmarks or whatever they are called these days.

The contact info for each Caltrans district survey office.

Freedom of Information Act requests are a pain in the side of those who have to fulfill them, however you are guaranteed a timely response.

Call them and get a contact email for someone in ROW. They respond pretty well this way....

I second Dane. I've never waited more than a day or two via direct email to the right department.

Even when the request indicated that Caltrans was a defendant in pending litigation?

I used Ryan's document to phone the District 4 ROW contact. I didn't speak to him in person, but left a message. I'll give it a few days, and if that doesn't work I'll start pursuing a formal Public Records Act request.

Problem solved - apparently my request simply got misplaced. I got a voice message in response to my phone message, asking that I resubmit my request via the web page. I did so, and an hour or so later I received the maps.

The system may not be perfect, but it's still pretty darn good. Thanks, Caltrans!
