Certificate of Correction

How does a certificate of correction get crossed-referenced in your county(ies)? The certificate of correction will reference the filed map, e.g., book and page. However, technically, the original map can not be altered; thus, the map can not reference the certificate of correction.

The county surveyor SHALL maintain an index of the certificate of compliance. The index can come in many different formats. What formats have you seen? What works? What does not? How do you research certificate of corrections?

I have seen a stamp or handwritten note at the top of the corrected tract map/parcel map/record of survey that states something to the effect "see certificate of correction bk 123 page 567".

How it gets there on the original I don't know. The note is outside of the border and in the margin, so technically it is not altering the document.

In OC, you can see a list of related Certs of Corrections when viewing the map that was referred to. You download them separately, but the list is visible when viewing the map.

In LA, I believe they are attached at the end of the PDF that gets downloaded from the County's research website. You will have a PDF of a PM and then a few pages at the end of the COC.

In Humboldt County, they note the certificate of correction (or amended survey or map) in the margin, rescan and send it out with the next batch of digital maps to those who are on their list of "subscribers" (they are not yet available on line through the Recorder's or County Surveyor's office). The County Surveyor also keeps an index of those that cross his desk (unincorporated areas)- but this index was only started in the early 1990's. They will also show up in the local survey map index that is regularly updated. This index is not created or maintained by the County (that's another story) but most local surveyors use it and by a simple search will get a hit on all certificates of correction.
