CA HPGN Documentation?

Hi, I'm looking for documentation on the California HPGN. I have seen the background info and data on the CSRC website and I've picked up bits elsewhere like the Caltrans Survey Manual. I'm wondering if there is some kind of comprehensive report published on the specs and procedure.

Anyone know if something exists or where to find it? Thanks.

Have you read the article in Cal Surveyor #167?

The Project reports should be available on the NGS web site. It might take some time to find them though.

The NGS GPS Project number is GPS412, which might help searching the NGS site.

Yes, the CalSurveyor article is an excellent summary. I (retired Geodetic Advisor) am going thru Don's (previous advisor) stuff NOW and don't find anything nearly as comprehensive as that.
I also went to NGS website: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov, and in the Search box, typed
CA HPGN. Several links came up that could be useful for you.

The original HPGN survey was GPS412 as mentioned. The re-observation projects, AFTER the CORS had started running, in each state, were started in mid-1990's. CA's is termed "the FBN Re-observations", and is GPS1288.
Then, after the October 1999 Hector Mine EQ, most of Southern CA was redone; that is GPS1460.
Some NGS webpages can't be 'found' by navigating through their pages. This one is findable only by using Search:

If you 'back up' by removing the last thing between the //s, you can get to maps and other things.
For the methodology (field specs), the FBN Instructions should be close to what was done for the HPGN (HARN) surveys.

For general info about HARNs (methodology), use HARN in the NGS search box.

Steve: Curious about your statement re Project Reports online. You say they 'should be' but hard to find. ARE they, actually? I did a search just now, and didn't find anything obvious. Many were scanned, I had been told, but they never made it to anyplace with an index, for example. Yes they SHOULD be, but I don't think they are!
The new advisor should (will) have a copy of the report, when they acquire the materials that I am passing on.

Marti, I was going from memory, which is not always perfect. I remember researching for the Cal Surveyor article and coming across some reports on the NGS web site which included marked up plots of the network diagram I prepared for the San Diego project GPS 430. I am not sure if it was the project report for GPS 412 or another paper.

I do have a copy of the report for GPS 430.

I think what I have posted so far would be just as good as the project report. Attached are a couple of other related documents. A scanned copy of a Xerox copy of the original plan locations for the HPGN stations on a State highway map and an NGS paper on the plan to adjust the California HPGN from 1991.

There was also another article in the Cal Surveyor, issue #98 from the Fall of 1992.

I do have a copy of Don's and Bob Nelson's paper on the HPGN presented to the 1991 ASCE specialty conference on Transportation Applications of GPS Positioning Strategy held in Sacramento, CA. I'll try to scan that next week and post.
