Santa Clara County's site is very nice, but is a work in progress. Enter the 408 M 1, get only the first page of a 7 page map. You have to type in each subsequent page number to get the remaining pages.

Alameda County is still hesitant to put them online, their IT department evidently thinks it's against the law, privacy or some such. IIRC, Napa County requires you create an account, give them your charge card info and pay a $80 deposit to get a copy of a single assessor's map!

You're correct Lee, I thought I had grabbed the Supreme court decision, but accidently grabbed the appellate decision. I'll have to post the correct decision later as I only have my iphone right now.

That is a good question Olin, and one I've wondered about myself. I have had success challenging a certain county recorder's fee structure for copies of their electronic map database using the cited case. As for deeds it is something to consider, but thinking out loud it may have to be approached on a county by county basis?

I like where this conversation is headed, we had some discussion at our last chapter meeting about accessing all of the available images of recorded deeds so that we (surveyors as a group) could avoid future research costs (currently $6 per deed via DataTree). I think it is definitely worthy of CLSA action and I hope that we can get something rolling soon...

Yes, Napa County monetizes them. Its ridiculous. Marin CLSA has tried to approach them multiple times with no success via a public records request. Maps should be available online for free to protect the public and make sure this information is widely available. I can understand its costly and time consuming to build such a system, but they should be able to sell a flash drive with all bulk maps for a nominal fee just like other Counties until such a system exists in that County.

Is anyone interested in creating a repository for surveyor to surveyor information? Does anything like this exist? We are going to be losing a lot of knowledge in the coming decades as surveyors retire or pass on. I go to older surveyors all the time with questions to try to get more local knowledge. I am attempting to compile that knowledge. "This surveyor was known to do good work until 1988 when they let their son do all of the work for them" is a hugely useful sentence to hear from a surveyor. Even years of practice and areas worked in would be fascinating information. I have a project in a county right now where I am trying to figure out the calibre of the Pre 82 CE who was county surveyor and added some confusing notes to a few maps. There is a ton of information just waiting to be lost and I don't have the time to extract all this information. I would like to put together as much of that as I can for my area, but am curious if other people are interested. Obviously it could lead to some disparaging commentary on older surveyors who might not be around to defend themselves, but I think as a whole it would be very beneficial information for future surveyors. Additionally, I think it would be a good way to remember the work done by past surveyors and to memorialize their work for the coming generations.
