Thanks Warren! That is good. I wonder how many agencies issue a letter of permission. I would love to see on!

Every agency I have worked for has required an approval to do outside work. Think beyond just a moonlighting surveyor or engineer, and you'll see that these requests are quite common. You've got policemen doing private security work, firemen doing construction, road workers doing traffic control for special events, secretaries doing retail during the holiday season, etc. I've attached a sample approval form for you to see.

It's good that there is a formal process for this. My experience has been much less formal - on a case by case basis.

I have a lot of police officers in the family and they do a lot of outside details. Most people prefer cops for that work.

All of the professions noted above do not appear to compete like surveying to surveying where there is a small and isolated market; there are no conflicts of note. I will review when I have a minute.
