I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Russ Forsberg, LS 4213, July 8th.

Russ was a Combat Engineers veteran of WWII and I believe exemplified the best of what has been called the Greatest Generation in American history.

I had the pleasure of meeting Russ early in my career thru a LS exam prep class that Vance Breshears ran at the CALTRANS District 11 office in San Diego. Russ volunteered his time to teach us the finer points of Legal Descriptions. He was retired by then, but you could tell he still enjoyed the subject matter and sharing it with us, in his down to earth and approachable manner. Russ and Vance had worked together a few years before then to develop a CALTRANS training academy program and you could tell there was a lot of respect and camaraderie there.

I've also attached a little of Russ's training material I had in my office as an example of his work.

Meeting Russ through Vance Breshears certainly helped me in my journey to become a Land Surveyor. While I did go on to assist in some LS exam prep programs, I could never match Russ's easy going, down to earth, approachable style.

I hope others will share what he meant to them too. Time spend with Russ, and those like him, was better than gold.

Russ was a dear friend. I hadn't seen him in years and I am sorry for that. We used to lecture together and I would propose foolish answers when we presented, trying to convince the students I was right! It was a charade that Russ and I used to do. We had a lot of fun. He was one of the best.
