The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Department of Public Works are announcing a recruitment for the position of Engineering Assistant. There is one full-time vacancy in the Land Development Division. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions that may occur in this classification while the list remains active. Eligibility lists remain active for a minimum of six months.

This position supports the County Road Commissioner by providing encroachment permit application review and associated field inspection services for the Land Development Division related to street and underground utility improvement projects. Under the direction of the Associate Engineer in Land Development, this position logs, checks and files all Encroachment Permit applications for the unincorporated lands within Marin County. The position also supports the Land Development Division with the preparation of violation/compliance letters for illegal encroachments in the County public right of way, and answering general Land Development related questions for the public permit counter on a weekly rotational basis.

The ideal candidate has construction inspection experience and provides appropriate interpretation and application of principles, practices and techniques related to the review and approval of general civil engineering and public works construction documents. The ideal candidate works successfully both independently and as part of a team, communicates clearly in writing and in person, and maintains positive working relationships with those contacted through the course of work, including all levels of representatives from governmental and private agencies, construction and consultant contractors, co-workers and the public. The ideal candidate successfully analyzes and resolves complex problems, has experience using software systems related to engineering or construction management projects and has experience using engineering equipment used in the field, including calculators and basic survey and grade checking instruments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Typically, completion of college level trigonometry and/or drafting or related coursework and six years of increasingly responsible experience in the field of civil engineering. College-level civil, structural or architectural engineering coursework may be substituted on a year by year basis for up to two years of the required experience. Construction inspection experience is highly desired.
