2017 CLSA Conference

Post by Anthony Maffia »

March 24 - 28
Wyndham Anaheim Garden Grove

====================

I attempted to make reservations on their web site and others, but the hotel appears to be booked.
Did CLSA reserve the entire hotel? If so, please post the code. Travel arrangements need to be made soon.

I'm thinking of bring the kids along for Disneyland (maybe.)

Good question, polaris. I know quite a few surveyors that would like to come, but their employers won't send them without a listing of topics or speakers available. We need to get the registration info and conference speaker list out soon to maximize the number of attendees.

I will confirm the last post, as for a local agency with limited travel funds, we need to justify the expense, as to send two people will be the budget for the year.

My understanding is that they are still confirming speakers now but have the schedule more or less planned out. But I agree with those who are impatient for info. It would be helpful to all parties, attendees and speakers if the call for presentations went out in say, the beginning of Summer for the following conference, with a deadline in late September, so that a preliminary program could be posted by the beginning of January.

A lot of organizations, particularly in the public sector move very slowly in approving training budgets and usually want to know all of the details well ahead of time. i.e. What will be taught? How does that pertain to your duties? and so on.

"I don't know whose speaking, or what they're speaking about, but the conference always has several worthwhile topics" may be accurate, but doesn't impress managers and other bean counters in the slightest.

I don't doubt that at least some of the delay might be due to lingering transition pains. I have confidence that those are being hammered out and probably won't be even a minor factor next year. I also believe that this year's conference is likely to be quite a bit better than last year's. I mean, they might make us eat in the parking lot again while it's raining, but I doubt it.

I fully agree with you, Evan. However, there have been things going on which are beyond our control.

In order to effectuate a more pacific timetable for the 2018 conference, I intend to ask the Conference Committee to begin their work in earnest after the July BOD Meeting. If we can line up the speakers before the end of the year, we will be in a better position for 2018.

Our new Executive Director and her Executive Assistant are working their fingers out trying to get up caught up.

I had actually asked Jeff for info on the conference 2 weeks ago and he sent me a skeleton to use when writing up my justification. I have not heard back yet on an approval, but at least Jeff was helpful.

What happened to Jeff?

When will there be an announcement on the new Executive Director?

Steve:

This came out in an eBlast from CLSA Central Office last Wednesday...

CLSA ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT
STAFFING CHANGE
Effective immediately, a staffing change affecting the California Land Surveyors Association is underway at CLSA's management company, California Advocates Management Services (CAMS). CLSA Executive Director Jeff Burgess is no longer an employee of CAMS. CLSA and CAMS management wish Jeff the very best in his future endeavors and expresses appreciation for his assistance with the association over the past 16 months.

The CLSA Executive Committee is recommending that the Board ratify the selection of CAMS' longtime employee Kim Oreno as the new Executive Director of the Association. Kim has over 12 years of experience in association management as a CAMS employee, and has had full-charge responsibility for other associations. Many CLSA members met Kim at last year's annual conference as she assisted Bill Hofferber in conducting a very successful Foundation auction.

Kim will continue to work under the supervision of Jennifer Blevins, CAMS Director of Management Services, and Mike Belote, President of California Advocates, Inc. She will also be assisted by Sophia Lisaius, CLSA Executive Administrator, and the full-range of other CAMS employees. The scope of CAMS services for CLSA will not change in any way.

Both the CLSA Executive Committee and CAMS believe that the selection of Kim Oreno to serve as CLSA Executive Director, as part of the CLSA contract with CAMS, will best position CLSA to prosper in 2017 and in the years ahead.

Do you think we will ever partner for conference with Nevada again? and meet in Reno, or Sacramento?

My guess is that is very unlikely as long as Dorothy and Crissy, et al, are under contract to NALS and organizing their conference. Just a guess though, based on historical events.

Thanks Ian,

Jeff used to have my email address in the database twice, but I do not see any such email in my inbox.

Apparently, the eBlast was sent to Directors.

Which means,as far as I'm concerned, it should be shared with all members unless it is something specific for the Directors to consider for some reason. (And I cannot think of a valid one at the moment.)

Please note, the association's tax records must be made available to the public. This appears to be a material disclosure. If I was a director, I would find out what my duties are. I would consider issuing a press statement.

I feel sorry for those of you who are still considering attending at the last minute, as I am not attending this year.
Without a preliminary program, it was easy for me to decide what to do; spend time with my dad at spring training!
I hope Orange Co. is going to represent well in their back yard, but can only remember what happened the last time the conference was in Anaheim.
Looks like this year is going to be another learning curve to the association. Good luck folks!

There should have been even a preliminary list of speakers and topics released with the registration info.
