California Spatial Reference System (CSRS) Epoch 2017.50 (NAD83)

Under Caltrans contract with the California Spatial Reference Center (CSRC), the Caltrans Office of Land Surveys tasked the CSRC to update the California Spatial Reference System (CSRS) to Epoch 2017.50 (NAD83). The stations included in this update (just under 950) comprise the California Spatial Reference Network. This extensive project is complete and links to the final deliverables are now available on the CSRC home page.

Because of the significant, differential three dimensional positional changes of survey control over time in California, it had become increasingly difficult in several areas of the state to measure current GNSS vectors and meet control specifications when attempting to constrain to NGS Epoch 2010.00 or CSRS 2011.00 values. This was the primary driver for this epoch update project.

The release of CSRS Epoch 2017.50, which has codified official status under the Public Resources Code (Sections 8870-8880), will provide a statewide positional backbone which will fit much better to true-of-date measurements. Additionally, the Project Report provides comprehensive documentation of the history, the process, and the results, and will serve as an excellent reference for future efforts.

This work reflects the culmination of the efforts of many and is also an excellent example, and tangible deliverable, of the longstanding partnership between Caltrans and the CSRC.
