Get on the Caltrans List!

Post by Rob_LS »

For those seeking employment within Caltrans (or any other state agency for that matter), take the "Exam" before the job advertises.

Some Caltrans Districts already have jobs openings advertised, and others will soon be advertising for Transportation Surveyor and Transportation Engineering Technician positions. In order to apply for the upcoming positions, you must first apply for, take, and pass “the exam” (on-line training and experience evaluation). Achieving a passing score on the exam gets you a ranking “on the list.” Refer to the exam postings for additional information. Note that the exam postings only show the first monthly salary range (Range A) in the series for each position. Refer to the Classification Description (specification) of each classification for typical tasks, minimum qualifications (education and/or certification) and knowledge and ability requirements. The exams are scored automatically, and a score and ranking is generated soon after submittal of your exam.

For Transportation Surveyor (TS) go to this link: https://jobs.ca.gov/CalHrPublic/Exams/B ... amCD=3PB60 and review the Official Exam Bulletin and preview the training and experience evaluation. Prepare your own information and then complete the on-line training and experience evaluation. TS is the classification at the starting rung of the TS career ladder. TS requires a 4 year degree in Land Surveying or an LSIT (or EIT) certificate issued by BPELSG (TS Range D requires a PLS or pre-82 CE).

For Transportation Engineering Technician (TET) go to this link: https://jobs.ca.gov/CalHrPublic/Exams/B ... amCD=5PB17 and go through the same process as detailed above for Transportation Surveyor. TET is our "utility player" classification. TETs are used in a wide variety of tasks within Caltrans including survey crew member, materials testing, etc. Does not require an LSIT.
