I'll take a stab - the County Surveyor and the County Assessor each found the lots to be valuable for commercial purposes. The CS further found that residential purposes were not valuable, and did not find the map technically correct as part of his certification.

interesting the commercial and residential note. Haven't seen that before, but I do not read that the Co. surveyor found the map to technically correct or not, not stated, so would be an assumption either way.

I'm not sure the State Highway ended, it just isn't shown outside the subdivision limits. The Sonora-Mono wagon road was established in 1860 in the alignment shown.

Hmmm - there are some land-locked lots in Block 2, while in Block 3 there are alternative access roadways.

might be hard for Warren and I to find this is a typical map for this part of the world and era.

The 20' roadways in Block 4 aren't connected to the State Highway.

Unsubdivided lands remaining in the subdivider's ownership aren't delineated but, presumably, would be reserved to provide for access upon sale of otherwise landlocked lots.

As it turns out, other means of access were provided from offsite development.

Could it be that the lots along the South Fork of the Stanislaus River aren't shown as going to the water's edge?

Russ is right, I've gotten used to seeing maps of this vintage.

Strawberry Music Festival moved to Mather, I think.

Strawberrry, Fishcamp, & Mather were on the list of my mountain stomping grounds in my younger years.

There was a time that if you took a left at Fishcamp off east bound 41 on the way into the Park and travel up Summit Road then right on Chowchilla Mountian Road, you would pop out in the middle of the golf course at Wawona. You could also 4x4 it all the way from the intx of 49 & Chowchilla Mountian Road between Mariposa and Oakhurst.

BTW, the Chowchilla Mountian Road was the historic stagecoach trail into the Park. They usta run a stagecoach down it once a year, I don't know if they still do.

My Dad is from Mariposa and my Mom was raised in Yosemite Valley. Miners and fisherman.

Looking at maps in this era, sometimes the surveyor's certificate was notarized, sometimes not.

But the exclusion of Lots numbered 13 was not the norm ...

Is it that it was approved and recorded in 1926, prior to the State's first modern land use planning laws enacted in 1929? The regulatory statutes in effect at the time did not regulate the design and improvement of subdivisions as required by current section 66499.30. The grandfather clause is not be applicable per Witt Home Ranch, Inc v. County of Sonoma. Unless it can be proven that the Board of Supervisors reviewed and approved the design and improvements of the subdivision, this map was not a creator of the lots depicted, merely a convenient description reference for subsequent conveyances.

We likely know quite a few folks in common.

yes the routes you describe are still there, in use and actually a part of the Co. maintained road system. The annual June Stage ride unfortunately stopped a few years ago, due to the aging of the organizers and the lack of participates. It was also used twice a year until the mid 1980's, to drive the YNP horse/mule herd to and from Wawona to the winter grazing. Quite a deal to see 100 herd of pack animals driven 40 miles, along a state highway and over the mountain. Mean while back to the map.

so the roads were dedicated to the public, but in fee or as easements? Who owns the roads and common areas? in some of these, it is a debated issue today.
