Relativity with regards to Survey Procedures

The Union Tribune reported on the most valuable real estate sales in San Diego. The top two are both my projects. All of the other ones cited in La Jolla are also my projects.

I am sharing this with other members so as to place my comments in perspective relative to the importance I place on surveying standards and the importance for the profession to elevate standards. With regards to the top two projects, one I am actively working on, both were begun by other surveyors. In one case, the surveyor set PK nails and hubs and prepared a plat and never filed anything. The state board went after him and fined him. I am still cleaning that mess up.

In the other, the previous land surveyor located lead plugs in the curb, set to mark out water lines, and he used these to define boundary lines, creating a 15 inch boundary line discrepancy. I was called in, to fix things but not before the lawyers were rattling their sabers, costing my client grief and a lot of money.

The point of all this is it is rather dismal to see how little attention was paid by the previous surveyors who were out there stumbling around, impressed that they were able to measure to the nearest millimeter.

This is a problem and unless we, as an association address it, will not go away.

I might get tarred and feathered for this remark... we do have surveyors who need more dreaded 'office training'.
Field/office separation is so drastic, we are getting a lot of people with lopsided skills.
